The 70th Venice International Film Festival, organized by La Biennale di Venezia, will run on Venice Lido from 28th August to 7th September 2013, directed by Alberto Barbera.
The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms: as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The Festival also organizes retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.

5 new titles to complete the programme of the 70th Film Festival
Une promesse will complete the programme of the 70th Venice Film Festival
Une Promesse, the new film (Out of Competition) by French director and scriptwriter Patrice Leconte, starring Rebecca Hall, Alan Rickman, and Richard Madden, as well as 4 new titles in the Out of Competition and Venezia Classici sections, will complete the programme of the 70th Venice International Film Festival.
In addition, American actress, scriptwriter and author Carrie Fisher will complete the International Jury of the Venezia 70 Competition, while Mexican director Amat Escalante will complete the international Jury for the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film.
Finally, the collective film “Venezia 70 - Future Reloaded”,
composed of 70short films lasting between 60 and 90 seconds, made by 70
directors from all over the world to celebrate the 70th anniversary of
the Festival, will be the second opening film at the inaugural ceremony.
It will be screened on August 28th in the Sala Grande at 10 PM, following Gravity by Alfonso Cuarón.

Une Promesse, written (with Jérôme Tonnerre) and directed by Patrice Leconte,
will have its world premiere screening at the 70th Venice Film
Festival. Based on a novel by Stefan Zweig, the film takes place in
Germany, in the period preceding World War I, and hinges on a woman who
falls in love with the young assistant to her husband, a rich and
powerful industrialist. Earlier films by Patrice Leconte include Monsieur Hire (1989), based on a novel by George Simenon, the well-known Le mari de la coiffeuse (The Hairdresser's Husband, 1990), starring Jean Rochefort and Anna Galiena, Ridicule (1996), which received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film, L'homme du train (The Man on the Train), which earned public acclaim at the Venice Film Festival in 2002, and Confidences trop intimes (Intimate Strangers, 2004).
Three new documentaries have been added to the programme of the 70th Venice International Film Festival:
· Double Play: James Benning and Richard Linklater by Gabe Klinger (Venezia Classici – Film History Documentaries)
· Donne nel mito: Anna Magnani by Marco Spagnoli (Venezia Classici – Film History Documentaries)
· Dai nostri inviati – La Rai racconta la Mostra del Cinema 1980 – 1989 by Enrico Salvatori, Giuseppe Giannotti, Davide Savelli (Out of Competition – Special Events).
Finally, Gideon Bachmann presents (and comments, live) Dietro le quinte di 8 e ½, 170
snapshots he personally took during the making of Fellini's masterpiece
(Out of Competition - Special Events), thus ideally completing the
one-day tribute to Fellini (Friday, September 6), which will feature the
world premiere of the new film by Ettore Scola Che strano chiamarsi Federico.
Carrie Fisher, who completes the International Jury of Venezia 70 Competition, is the unforgettable Princess Leia of the Star Wars trilogy: Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). She starred in the cult movie The Blues Brothers (1980) directed by John Landis, alongside John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, and in When Harry Met Sally
(1989) by Rob Reiner, where she played the role of Marie, the best
friend of Sally (Meg Ryan). In 1987 she published the
semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge, which
she personally adapted for the screen in the film directed by Mike
Nichols in 1990, starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. She has
written many books, including Delusions of Grandma, Surrender the Pink, The Best Awful, which were very successful. Her novel Wishful Drinking has become a one-woman show and HBO documentary, earning both Emmy and Grammy nominations.
Amat Escalante, who completes the international Jury of the "Luigi De Laurentiis" Venice Award for a Debut Film,won the Best Director Award at the most recent edition of the Cannes Film Festival with his film Heli. Escalante made his film debut as a self-taught director. His first film, Sangre,
in competition in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film
Festival in 2005, won the FIPRESCI award. Escalante returned to Cannes
in 2008 with his second film, Los Bastardos, also screened in the
Un Certain Regard section, earning excellent critical response. The
film was then presented at many other international festivals, winning
several awards. Heli (2013) is the film that consecrated his name.
